Dirk Kempthorne Awarded First NAIFA Defender of Financial Freedom Award

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is pleased to present NAIFA’s inaugural Defender of Financial Freedom Award to Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.

Gov. Kempthorne is noteworthy for his accomplished career in public service, distinguishing himself as mayor of Boise, Idaho, U.S. senator for Idaho, governor of Idaho, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior. He was an unflinching champion of the insurance and financial services industry in his role as president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers from November 2010 through August 2018.

NAIFA’s Defender of Financial Freedom Award recognizes individuals who make extraordinary contributions advancing the strength and continued success of the insurance and financial services industry. Recipients will have demonstrated strong support for the advisor community and consumers who benefit from the products and services advisors offer. NAIFA is proud to recognize Defenders of Financial Freedom for their exemplary dedication and the inspiration they provide advisors and others inside and outside of the industry.

“Gov. Kempthorne has been a consistent and persistent friend to NAIFA and all insurance and financial advisors,” said NAIFA President Keith Gillies. “In his public remarks, his private sentiments, and his actions, he has always promoted the important roles advisors play in protecting our industry from legislative and regulatory challenges and in providing financial and retirement security to 90 million American families.”

As president and CEO of the ACLI, Kempthorne served as chief representative and spokesman for the U.S. life insurance industry before Congress, the administration, in all state capitals, and in the international arena. Under Kempthorne’s leadership, ACLI partnered with NAIFA to advocate on issues important to life insurance carriers, advisors, and consumers. Most recently, he was a prominent voice in the successful effort to vacate the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule.

Gov. Kempthorne has been a thought-leader on insurance and financial issues. He wrote columns and was interviewed for articles in major media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Morning Consult.

As a highly regarded public speaker he spoke on behalf of the insurance and financial services industry in the United States and abroad. His engagements included regular appearances, either in person or via video, at NAIFA’s Performance + Purpose meeting and Congressional Conference.

“It has been a pleasure and genuine honor to work with Governor Kempthorne and the ACLI on legislative and regulatory issues of great mutual importance to our industry, ACLI’s member companies, NAIFA members, and consumers,” said NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux. “The governor understands as well as anyone the formidable strength the ACLI-NAIFA partnership brings to bear. He has been a positive force on behalf of insurance companies, advisors, and clients, and I can think of no one more deserving of receiving NAIFA’s Defender of Financial Freedom Award than Dirk Kempthorne.”

Founded in 1890 as The National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU), NAIFA is the oldest, largest and most prestigious association representing the interests of insurance professionals from every Congressional district in the United States. Our mission – to advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment, enhance business and professional skills, and promote the ethical conduct of its members – is the reason NAIFA has consistently and resoundingly stood up for agents and called upon members to grow their knowledge while following the highest ethical standards in the industry.
