NAIFA Members Convene for Congressional Conference

NAIFA Members to Meet with Lawmakers to Advocate for Policies
That Encourage Americans to Save for Retirement, Protect Against Risks

Industry’s largest Day on the Hill to bring together more than 800 insurance and financial
advisors at NAIFA Congressional Conference; Reps. Lahood, Sanchez on agenda

Washington – With more than 10,000 Americans on track to reach retirement age every day, members of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors will meet with their representatives to educate them about the industry and the critical role life insurance products and annuities play in securing the financial futures of 90 million American families. In partnership with the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), NAIFA will deliver a uniform industry message and ask Congress for their continued support for policies that encourage families and businesses to prepare and save for their futures.

“Studies show that Americans’ lack of financial preparation for retirement, disability, untimely death or other potential hardships has become epidemic,” said NAIFA President Keith Gillies, CFP, CLU, ChFC. “NAIFA members are passionate about the business and the value they bring to clients. We look forward to our in-person meetings with Congress and the opportunity to defend the policies that allow consumers to take responsibility for their future. Good policy should encourage – not hinder – access to affordable, professional guidance to those who need it the most: lower- and middle-income retirement savers.”

Third-party research validates the strong impact and influence of NAIFA’s advocacy efforts in the insurance and financial services space. The National Journal’s research arm, surveying more than 15,000 Capitol Hill players and others, concluded that NAIFA is viewed by policymakers as the most credible, valued and respected voice in the insurance industry.

On May 22, registrants will attend an advocacy briefing at the Marriott Renaissance in Washington. On May 23, more than 800 attendees will go to Capitol Hill for meetings with their senators and representatives.

Among the speakers on May 22:
  • Josh Kraushaar, political editor, National Journal
  • Rep. Darin Lahood (R-IL)
  • Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA)
Other issues on NAIFA members’ agenda include the appropriate tax treatment of insurance and retirement products, health reform, consumer protection, financial literacy and best interest standard.

Media are invited to attend the advocacy briefing. Please RSVP to NAIFA’s Mark Briscoe or Sheila Owens.
