National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors

Happy New Year from NAIFA!

Happy New Year from your friends and colleagues at NAIFA! The past year was a very exciting one for your professional association, as our transformation under the NAIFA 20/20 strategic plan flew into high gear and brought changes to our structure and programming to provide every NAIFA member with a high-quality membership experience. I am pleased to report that 2020 promises to bring even greater energy, new programs, and further advocacy successes.

This year, 2020, is NAIFA’s 130th anniversary, so we are celebrating our illustrious past while moving full-bore into the future. I hope all of you will join me in welcoming NAIFA’s new president, Cammie Scott, and kicking off our anniversary celebration at our January 9 NAIFA Live event. For those not familiar with NAIFA Live, it is our monthly meeting hosted by a NAIFA state chapter or regional group of chapters and presented in an online, interactive forum for those not attending in person. It’s a great program, and this is a perfect opportunity for you to experience it firsthand.

The January 9 NAIFA Live will take place from 2-3:30 PM (EST) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Registration is open now for on-site and virtual attendees as well as for those who wish to participate in watch parties at locations around the country. In addition to remarks by Cammie on her vision for NAIFA’s coming year, the event will feature a presentation by Kurtis Kersey, a self-described “recovering financial advisor,” who will share his insights on how financial professionals can most effectively serve clients using social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. CE credit is available to attendees in some locations.

A Continuing Focus on Advocacy

As we usher in the new year, NAIFA is in a great position to continue as a unifying force working as the voice of our industry and the leading association serving the interests of agents and advisors and their clients in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Our advocacy wins over the past few years have been nothing short of astounding. Along with our partners at the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), we brought a lawsuit that was instrumental in striking down the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule that would have placed barriers between financial professionals and their clients and prevented many lower- and middle-income Americans from getting retirement advice and services. This past year, our advocacy successes included securing passage of the Senior Safe Act (allowing financial professions to protect older clients against financial abuse) and the SECURE Act (encouraging small businesses to offer retirement benefits and giving retirement savers more opportunities and greater flexibility). NAIFA also worked successfully on the repeal of the so-called “Cadillac tax” on some employer-provided health insurance plans, among many other issues vital to your success.

Advocacy remains a priority for 2020. This year we embark on a partnership with ACLI focusing on state issues important to you and your clients. This is a very exciting development, because NAIFA is the only association for agents and advisors with a proven track record of success with every state legislature and insurance commission across the country. We are the only association working on behalf of financial professionals at the federal level and in every state, so our partnership with ACLI, which includes the support of its insurance company members, makes us an even more formidable force.
