Highlights of NAIFA's National Advocacy Meeting Include Rep. Adrian Smith and a Day on the Hill

Rep. Adrian Smith speaks to NAIFA members.
NAIFA’s advocacy leaders yesterday had dozens of meetings with their legislators and congressional staff. The Day on Capitol Hill was the culmination of NAIFA’s National Advocacy Meeting, during which state grassroots and political action committee chairs, along with other association leaders, received training, discussed priorities, and set strategies.

NAIFA members urged their representatives and senators to push for passage this month of the SECURE Act, a bill that would make it easier for small businesses to provide retirement plans, give retirement savers greater flexibility, and prompt up to 700,000 workers who currently do not save for retirement to begin doing so. The SECURE Act passed in the House earlier this year with overwhelming bipartisan support in a 417-3 vote, but has stalled in the Senate due to procedural matters and minor concerns raised by a very few senators.

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) spoke to NAIFA members on Tuesday before their Hill visits and voiced his support for SECURE. “It has some meat to it and was almost passed unanimously,” he said. “There are many reasons we need to get this done before the end of the year. There is a strong appetite for empowering people to look out for their own financial futures.”

Smith also acknowledged the great work NAIFA members do on behalf of their clients and their contribution to strengthening the U.S. economy.

“We need more of you,” he said. “Because of insurance and financial professionals, good things happen economically and more people are secure in their financial futures.”

“It’s because of all of you that Americans have more options,” he added. “Your clients have achieved financial goals that maybe even went beyond what they thought possible for them to achieve.”
