Rep. Schweikert to NAIFA: You have a big voice in Washington

With the midterm elections over, Congressman David Schweikert (R-Ariz) advised NAIFA members to seize the moment and start building relationships with new members of Congress today.

“You know what the secret is? Be there,” Schweikert told attendees of NAIFA’s Advisors Political Involvement Committee (APIC) conference in Washington. “Pick up the phone and call that new (lawmaker) and get on their radar. Invite them to coffee and help them understand the products you sell, the way those products help their constituents and the way they change peoples’ lives.”

Rep. Schweikert also stressed the importance of meeting with lawmakers “up and down the food chain of elected officials,” including state legislators, many of whom are destined to become members of Congress.

“A lot of these (members) definitely want to know you. They start to realize that the day they get elected, they might think they know everything. But the day after they get elected, they are overwhelmed with what they don’t know.”

Rep. Schweikert congratulated NAIFA members for their political involvement and role as PAC contributors. “You have a big voice in Washington, but there’s a lot of other voices competing with you. The secret is more than your checkbook. It’s your ability to recruit individuals who can speak for your industry."

With many Americans approaching retirement age, Rep. Schweikert said NAIFA members' voices about the need to preserve current laws for insurance and annuity products must be heard in the halls of Congress. "So many people will not have the resources (to retire). You are part of the solution."

Retirement security and agent licensing concerns are among the issues NAIFA members will raise with lawmakers during meetings today on Capitol Hill.
