Fiduciary rule, federal tax and health reform on agenda at NAIFA’s Congressional Conference May 23-24, 2017

Nearly 700 members of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors
to meet May 24 with their senators and representatives

WASHINGTON – Fiduciary advice as defined by both the Department of Labor and the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as tax and health reform will be among the priorities NAIFA members will discuss with lawmakers May 24 during meetings on Capitol Hill. NAIFA members will be in Washington to attend the 2017 Congressional Conference May 23-24 at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor.

“With the new administration and Congress focusing on major issues like tax reform and healthcare, it is critical for NAIFA members to meet with their representative and educate them  about our industry,” said NAIFA President Paul Dougherty. “The 115th Congress includes 59 freshman members, many of whom are unaware of the unique role of the life insurance industry. We need Congress to be informed so their proposals strengthen – not weaken – the ability of 75 million American families to continue to rely on life insurance and annuity products to help protect against financial risks and secure financial futures.”

In February, President Trump’s presidential memos led to the Department of Labor’s decision to delay the applicable date of the Obama administration’s fiduciary rule, Dougherty noted. “The delay is a direct result of the efforts of NAIFA and our industry partners. NAIFA members will tell Congress that the DOL needs to delay the entire fiduciary rule until it completes the new analysis as directed by the White House.”

Other issues on the agenda will be the role of the life insurance industry and appropriate tax treatment of insurance and retirement products, and health reform and senior protection.

Third-party research validates the impact of NAIFA’s advocacy efforts in the insurance and financial services space. The National Journal’s research arm, surveying more than 15,000 Capitol Hill players and others, concluded that NAIFA is viewed by policymakers as the most credible, valued and respected voice in the insurance industry.

On May 23, registrants will attend an advocacy briefing at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor. On May 24, the 700 attendees will go to Capitol Hill for meetings with their senators and representatives.

Media are invited to attend the advocacy briefing. Please RSVP to NAIFA’s Mark Briscoe or Sheila Owens.
