NAIFA’S Annual Conference: A 'Spectacular' Event

Those who led the educational workshops were equally impressive. They addressed issues that affect all areas of our industry—from disability income, life, health, long-term-care and multiline insurance to annuities and financial planning. Many of these sessions were covered on naifablog.com.

The general session speakers were in a class by themselves—recording artist and recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor, Keni Thomas, exhibition skydiver Jim McCormick, firefighter and 9-11 hero, Richard Picciotto, and one of the most admired men in America, General Colin Powell. These men captivated us with stories of how they faced and overcame overwhelming obstacles and used their technical and leadership skills to triumph against all odds.

Terry Headley launched our grassroots activities on Capitol Hill when he testified before a House Committee on issues relating to standard of care. The next day, more than 1,000 attendees took three main messages to their elected officials and staffers during NAIFA’s Day on the Hill.

NAIFA members make a difference in visits with elected officials and staffers

Nearly 1,000 NAIFA members took their grassroots message to Capitol Hill Sept. 14 for NAIFA’s Day on the Hill event. Members from all 50 states scheduled meetings with 366 congressional offices to deliver three primary messages:

  • Efforts to solve Washington's budgetary problems, including potential tax code changes affecting life insurance, annuities, and disability and long-term-care insurance, should not discourage Americans from using these products to protect their financial futures.
  • Health care reform's Medical Loss Ration provision must be changed to protect the role of the agent.
  • Federal fiduciary standard of care proposals from the Department of Labor and SEC must not hinder the ability of broker-dealers and registered reps to serve middle-market investors.
