Q: What is a Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) class like?
Classes are small (7-14 students), informal and interactive. Each session begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. The Institute’s core course material is derived from the works of Stephen Covey, Jim Collins, John Maxwell, and Kouzes & Posner. Q: What can I expect to accomplish?
The coursework is presented in six one-day sessions over a six-month period. You will:
- Create personal vision and mission statements and guiding principles
- Create your business plan
- Explore tools and techniques to improve your practice
- Expand your professional network and form long-lasting bonds with other leaders
- Learn how to increase productivity, efficiency and effectiveness
- Increase self understanding to realize enhanced interpersonal relationships
- Apply your leadership skills through NAIFA service
Q: What will I be expected to do?
- Attend all sessions. The cost of missing a session is enormous. In the event of an emergency, one session may be missed. No more than one session may be missed, regardless of reason. Attendance at the first and last sessions is required to graduate.
- Contribute to the success of the class through active participation.
- Complete all homework assignments between classes. One person’s lack of preparation will affect everyone.
- The six documents. The written assignments are key elements of the LILI curriculum. Each document is due at different times.

- 2-year plan for volunteer service
- Commit to serve as a leader in NAIFA for at least two years.
- NAIFA member:
- Active member for at least 1 year OR
- New member with at least 5 years industry experience OR
- Associate member (limit 1 per class)
- Aspire to make a positive difference in your life, association and industry
- Be open to self-exploration and personal change
- Pay student tuition
- Attend all six one-day sessions
- Fulfill required assignments
- Commit to two years of service as a leader in your association
Q: Will I earn CE (continuing education) credits for taking LILI?
While CE credits are not the main reason one should participate in LILI, graduates may be eligible for them. Each state determines its own guidelines for granting CE credits and individual states may choose to award credits for completing the course.
State and local association executives working towards their CAE certification must accrue 75 hours of education. The ASAE (American Society of Association Executives) awards 36 credit hours towards the certification for completing LILI.
