New York Regulation Requires Life Insurers to Search Death Master File

On May 14, as a result of a New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) investigation into life insurers’ claims practices, the DFS issued a rule requiring New York life insurers to search the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Death Master File every three months in order to find recently deceased policyholders.
