Government Relations Wins and Accomplishments through August 2011

As NAIFA prepares for our 2011 Career Conference and Annual Meeting in Washington DC, the Government Relations team reported to you on some of the major legislative and regulatory accomplishments which have been achieved on your behalf. We continue to work every day—both in D.C. and assisting state associations around the country—to protect the interests of NAIFA members and their business from threats that may come your way.

The past year has seen an unprecedented amount of legislative and regulatory activity affecting the insurance and financial advising industries. Federal agencies continue to develop new and sweeping regulations associated with the health care reform law and financial services regulatory reform law. NAIFA is involved in every step of the process to ensure the most favorable outcome possible for members. We have been successful in helping to shape these regulations to your benefit but many obstacles still remain.

On the state level, there are continued threats to the preferential tax treatment of insurance products. Individual states are also dealing with STOLI, STATs, establishing State Health Exchanges, and issues of commission disclosure.

Without the continued representation of NAIFA members by government relations professionals, grassroots activity of every NAIFA member, and political giving to NAIFA’s IFAPAC, NAIFA cannot stave off these threats.

Today, we would like to take this opportunity to once again update you on the continuing developments and accomplishments that NAIFA and its state federations have achieved. Take some time to see the positive results that can be achieved through political activity.

Please join us at the Legislative Forum and discussion on Monday, September 12 at NAIFA’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. (9 a.m. International Ballroom). NAIFA’s Government Relations Team will be on hand to report to you and answer your questions about the latest legislative and regulatory developments impacting our industry.

Also, be sure to sign up for the GR Workshop on Tuesday, September 13 (9 a.m. Jefferson Ballroom-West) so you can learn how to take the messages back home to positively grow your state and local NAIFA grassroots efforts.
